If you or your teen has been referred for ADHD testing, you might already be wondering:
“What if the test says I have ADHD?”
Or perhaps:
“If my child takes an ADHD test, does that automatically lead to a diagnosis?”
The short answer is no.
Taking an ADHD test does not automatically mean you will be diagnosed with ADHD. ADHD diagnosis involves looking at multiple pieces of information—including symptoms, history, everyday functioning, behavioral questionnaires, and clinical evaluation. Cognitive testing can provide useful objective data, but no single test result tells the entire story.
At Bubblegum and Duct Tape Psychiatry, we offer Creyos ADHD testing for adolescents ages 12 and older and adults as part of our approach to ADHD evaluation at our Psychiatry and Therapy Clinic in Sacramento.

💡 Does an ADHD Test Automatically Diagnose ADHD?
No. An ADHD test is part of the evaluation—not an automatic diagnosis.
There is no single cognitive test that independently determines whether someone has ADHD.
Instead, a healthcare professional considers whether symptoms:
- Are persistent
- Affect everyday functioning
- Occur in multiple settings
- Are consistent with ADHD diagnostic criteria
- Began during the appropriate developmental period
- Could be better explained by another condition
For example, anxiety, depression, sleep problems, stress, and certain physical health conditions can cause symptoms that resemble ADHD. That’s why a thorough evaluation is important.
🤔 Why Take an ADHD Test If It Doesn’t Automatically Diagnose You?
Because testing can provide additional information that helps your provider understand what’s happening.
Think about someone who says:
“I have a really hard time concentrating.”
That experience is important—but there are many possible reasons for it.
Cognitive testing can add objective information about how someone performs on structured tasks involving abilities such as attention, working memory, planning, and response inhibition.
The purpose isn’t to force a diagnosis.
It’s to make the evaluation more informed.
🧠 What Is Creyos ADHD Testing?
Creyos is a digital cognitive assessment platform used by healthcare professionals to evaluate cognitive performance.
Its ADHD-focused protocol combines interactive cognitive tasks with standardized, age-appropriate behavioral questionnaires.
Creyos measures performance across cognitive areas associated with ADHD and compares results with demographic-specific normative data. Its ADHD protocol evaluates 14 performance markers and provides clinicians with a report they can consider alongside other clinical information.

🎯 What Does Creyos ADHD Testing Measure?
Creyos evaluates several cognitive abilities relevant to ADHD assessment.
Attention
How effectively can you focus on relevant information while ignoring distractions?
Sustained Attention
Can you maintain attention during an ongoing or repetitive task?
Working Memory
How effectively can you temporarily hold and use information?
Working memory is important when following instructions, solving problems, or keeping track of multiple steps.
Planning
How effectively can you organize steps toward completing a goal?
Response Inhibition
Can you suppress an automatic response when necessary?
Creyos uses specific cognitive tasks to evaluate these areas and provide objective performance information to the clinician.
⭐ What Happens If Your Creyos Results Show ADHD-Related Markers?
It still doesn’t automatically mean you have ADHD.
This is one of the most important things to understand before testing.
A result outside the expected range indicates something about your performance on that particular cognitive measure. Your provider then interprets that information within the broader context of your symptoms, history, and functioning.
For example, they may consider:
- Do your symptoms occur at home, school, work, or in relationships?
- How long have these difficulties been happening?
- Were symptoms present during childhood?
- How much do they interfere with everyday life?
- Could anxiety, depression, sleep problems, or another condition be contributing?
The test provides information.
Your clinician evaluates what that information means for you.
📊 What If My Creyos Results Are Within Typical Ranges?
The reverse is also important.
A result within typical ranges doesn’t necessarily mean every attention or executive-function concern you’re experiencing should be dismissed.
Your provider still considers your:
- Symptoms
- History
- Behavioral questionnaires
- Daily functioning
- School or workplace difficulties
- Other mental health concerns
- Clinical interview
This is another reason ADHD evaluation shouldn’t depend on one score.

⭐ What Actually Determines an ADHD Diagnosis?
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, ADHD diagnosis involves more than simply experiencing occasional distraction or forgetfulness.
Symptoms must be persistent, interfere with functioning, and occur across multiple situations. Providers may use clinical interviews, behavior-rating scales or symptom checklists, history, and psychological tests assessing cognitive abilities as part of an evaluation.
For adults, providers also need to establish that ADHD symptoms were present during childhood, even if the person wasn’t diagnosed at the time.
🧠 Could ADHD-Like Symptoms Actually Be Something Else?
Yes—and this is one reason careful evaluation matters.
Difficulty concentrating can occur for many reasons.
Conditions and circumstances that may produce overlapping symptoms include:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Sleep problems
- Chronic stress
- Other mental or physical health concerns
For example:
Someone with ADHD might become distracted because they have difficulty regulating attention.
Someone experiencing anxiety might struggle to concentrate because their attention is consumed by worry.
From the outside, both people may simply appear distracted.
A comprehensive evaluation helps clinicians investigate what’s behind the symptom rather than treating the symptom alone.
💭 Can You Have ADHD and Another Mental Health Condition?
Yes.
ADHD can occur alongside other mental health conditions.
That means an evaluation doesn’t always produce a simple “ADHD or not ADHD” answer.
A provider may determine that:
- ADHD is likely contributing to symptoms
- Another condition better explains the symptoms
- Multiple conditions may be contributing
- Additional evaluation is needed
The goal is to develop the most accurate understanding possible so treatment can address the person’s actual needs.
📍 ADHD Testing for Teens Ages 12+ in Sacramento
Parents may understandably worry that bringing their teenager in for ADHD testing will immediately result in a diagnosis or medication.
Testing doesn’t automatically mean either.
At our practice, Creyos ADHD testing is available for adolescents ages 12 and older.
Parents may consider discussing an ADHD evaluation when their teen consistently:
- Loses assignments or belongings
- Struggles to stay focused
- Has difficulty following instructions
- Procrastinates excessively
- Has trouble organizing schoolwork
- Becomes overwhelmed by multi-step projects
- Struggles with time management
- Has difficulty completing tasks
These behaviors don’t automatically mean ADHD.
An evaluation helps explore why they’re happening.
📍 ADHD Testing for Adults in Sacramento
Adults can also reach their 20s, 30s, 40s, or later without realizing that ADHD may be contributing to lifelong difficulties.
You might recognize patterns such as:
- Chronic procrastination
- Poor time management
- Constantly losing things
- Missing appointments
- Difficulty staying organized
- Starting projects without finishing them
- Trouble maintaining attention
- Feeling overwhelmed by routine responsibilities
ADHD symptoms begin during childhood, but some people aren’t diagnosed until adulthood because earlier symptoms were overlooked or became more impairing as life’s demands increased.
📌 What Happens After Creyos ADHD Testing?
After testing, Creyos generates a report that combines cognitive performance information and relevant questionnaire results. The platform shows how performance compares with normative ranges across ADHD-related markers.
Your provider can then review the results alongside the rest of your evaluation.
Depending on the findings, next steps may include:
- Further evaluation
- ADHD education and strategies
- Therapy
- Treatment for another identified concern
- School or workplace support
- Lifestyle recommendations
- Medication management when clinically appropriate
- Follow-up monitoring
Testing doesn’t predetermine the outcome.
It helps provide information for deciding what comes next.
⭐ What If the Evaluation Shows You Don’t Have ADHD?
That’s still valuable information.
An ADHD evaluation isn’t only successful when it results in an ADHD diagnosis.
If ADHD doesn’t appear to explain your symptoms, your provider can consider whether another issue may be contributing.
Instead of continuing to wonder:
“Why can’t I focus?”
you may be one step closer to understanding what actually needs attention.
The purpose of testing isn’t to get a diagnosis. It’s to get clarity.
