ADHD Testing vs. ADHD Diagnosis

If you or your teen is struggling with focus, organization, forgetfulness, procrastination, or impulsivity, you may have started looking into ADHD testing.

But there’s an important distinction that many people don’t realize:

ADHD testing and an ADHD diagnosis are not the same thing.

Testing can provide valuable information about cognitive performance and ADHD-related symptoms. A diagnosis, however, requires a broader clinical evaluation that considers symptoms, history, functioning, and other possible explanations.

At Bubblegum and Duct Tape Psychiatry, we offer Creyos ADHD testing for adolescents ages 12 and older and adults as part of a comprehensive ADHD evaluation. Our Psychiatry and Therapy Clinic in Sacramento helps teens and adults better understand their symptoms and explore personalized treatment options.

💡 ADHD Testing vs. ADHD Diagnosis

Here’s an easy way to think about it:

ADHD testing = gathering information.

ADHD diagnosis = a qualified clinician determining whether the overall clinical picture meets diagnostic criteria for ADHD.

An ADHD test may measure cognitive abilities such as attention, working memory, planning, or response inhibition.

A diagnosis considers much more.

Your provider may look at:

  • Current symptoms
  • Childhood and developmental history
  • Medical history
  • Behavioral questionnaires
  • School or workplace functioning
  • Daily life
  • Clinical interviews
  • Cognitive testing
  • Other mental health or medical factors

So, a test result by itself does not automatically mean you have ADHD.

🎯 What Is ADHD Testing?

ADHD testing refers to assessments used to gather information about symptoms, behavior, and/or cognitive performance that may be relevant to an ADHD evaluation.

Different assessments serve different purposes.

Some involve questionnaires that ask about symptoms and everyday behaviors.

Others, such as Creyos cognitive testing, use interactive tasks to provide objective information about how someone performs across specific cognitive abilities.

Testing can give a clinician additional information to consider—but it doesn’t replace clinical judgment.

🎯 What Is an ADHD Diagnosis?

An ADHD diagnosis is a clinical determination made after a healthcare professional evaluates the person’s overall symptoms and history.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, ADHD diagnosis involves looking at symptoms and their impact on functioning, as well as when symptoms began and whether they occur across settings. Other conditions that may cause similar symptoms also need to be considered.

This is why someone can have difficulties with concentration and still not necessarily have ADHD.

For example, attention problems can also be associated with:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Chronic stress
  • Other mental health conditions
  • Certain medical concerns

A comprehensive evaluation helps distinguish between these possibilities.

⭐ What Is Creyos ADHD Testing?

Creyos is a digital cognitive assessment platform that provides healthcare professionals with objective information about cognitive performance.

Its ADHD-focused protocol combines interactive cognitive tasks with age-appropriate behavioral questionnaires.

At Bubblegum and Duct Tape Psychiatry, Creyos ADHD testing is available for adolescents ages 12 and older and adults.

Creyos is designed to provide another source of information that clinicians can consider alongside symptoms, history, and clinical evaluation.

⭐ What Does Creyos ADHD Testing Measure?

The Creyos ADHD protocol evaluates several cognitive abilities relevant to ADHD assessment.

Attention

How effectively can someone focus on relevant information while filtering distractions?

Sustained Attention

How well can someone maintain attention during an ongoing task?

Working Memory

How effectively can someone temporarily hold and use information?

Planning

How well can someone organize steps toward achieving a goal?

Response Inhibition

How effectively can someone control an automatic response when necessary?

These areas can provide useful information about cognitive performance, particularly when considered alongside everyday experiences and behavioral information.

🤔 Does Creyos Diagnose ADHD?

No.

This is one of the most important things to understand before taking an ADHD test.

Creyos provides cognitive performance information. It is not a standalone diagnostic tool.

A clinician considers Creyos results alongside other information to determine whether the overall clinical picture is consistent with ADHD.

Think of it this way:

Creyos gives your provider another piece of the puzzle.

It doesn’t decide what the entire puzzle means.

🤔 Why Isn’t One ADHD Test Enough?

ADHD affects people differently.

Two people can both report difficulty concentrating but have completely different reasons for experiencing it.

For example:

Person A: Their attention shifts frequently, they lose track of tasks, and these patterns have been present since childhood.

Person B: Their concentration has become difficult recently because they’re experiencing severe anxiety and aren’t sleeping well.

Both may answer “yes” when asked whether they have trouble focusing.

But the underlying situation may be very different.

That’s why ADHD evaluation needs context.

📌 What Does an ADHD Evaluation Look At?

A comprehensive ADHD evaluation may consider several areas.

1. Current Symptoms

What difficulties are happening right now?

Your provider may ask about:

  • Attention
  • Forgetfulness
  • Organization
  • Impulsivity
  • Time management
  • Procrastination
  • Hyperactivity
  • Emotional regulation

2. Developmental History

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition, so understanding childhood patterns can be important.

Your provider may ask about school, behavior, attention, organization, and other childhood experiences.

3. Daily Functioning

Symptoms matter because of how they affect everyday life.

Your provider may consider functioning at:

  • Home
  • School
  • Work
  • Social settings
  • Relationships

4. Behavioral Questionnaires

Standardized questionnaires can provide additional information about ADHD-related symptoms and behaviors.

5. Cognitive Testing

Tools such as Creyos can provide objective information about cognitive performance.

6. Other Possible Explanations

Your provider may consider whether another condition or circumstance could better explain the symptoms—or whether multiple concerns may be occurring together.

💭 What If My ADHD Test Results Are Outside the Typical Range?

An unusual or below-expected result on a cognitive measure does not automatically mean you have ADHD.

It means that your performance on that particular task or cognitive measure differed from the comparison group.

Your provider needs to interpret that result in context.

They may ask:

  • Do you experience similar difficulties in everyday life?
  • How long have they been happening?
  • Were similar patterns present during childhood?
  • Do they occur across different settings?
  • Could anxiety or another condition be contributing?
  • How significantly do the symptoms affect functioning?

The test provides information.

The clinical evaluation provides the context.

💭 What If My Test Results Are Within Expected Ranges?

The same principle applies in the other direction.

Results within expected ranges don’t necessarily mean your concerns aren’t real.

Your provider will still consider your:

  • Symptoms
  • History
  • Questionnaires
  • Daily functioning
  • School or workplace experiences
  • Clinical interview

A cognitive assessment is only one component of the overall picture.

🤝 ADHD Testing for Teens Ages 12 and Older

Parents often wonder whether their teenager should be evaluated for ADHD.

Some signs that may warrant a conversation with a mental health professional include:

  • Persistent difficulty concentrating
  • Frequently forgetting assignments
  • Losing belongings
  • Difficulty organizing schoolwork
  • Trouble starting or completing projects
  • Chronic procrastination
  • Difficulty following multi-step instructions
  • Poor time management
  • Impulsive behavior
  • Academic difficulties that don’t seem to match their abilities

These symptoms don’t automatically indicate ADHD.

However, when they persist and interfere with school, home, relationships, or everyday responsibilities, an evaluation may help provide clarity.

At our Sacramento practice, Creyos ADHD testing is available for adolescents ages 12 and older.

🤝 ADHD Testing for Adults

Adults can also experience ADHD-related difficulties that affect work and everyday life.

You might notice:

  • Chronic procrastination
  • Missed deadlines
  • Difficulty prioritizing
  • Frequent forgetfulness
  • Poor organization
  • Difficulty completing projects
  • Losing important belongings
  • Trouble managing multiple responsibilities
  • Difficulty maintaining focus during meetings

Some adults aren’t diagnosed until later in life because their symptoms were overlooked, compensated for, or became more noticeable as responsibilities increased.

At Bubblegum and Duct Tape Psychiatry, Creyos ADHD testing is also available for adults.

💊 Does ADHD Testing Mean Medication Comes Next?

Not necessarily.

Another common misconception is that getting tested automatically means receiving medication.

An evaluation simply helps your provider understand what’s happening.

Depending on your individual needs, recommendations may include:

  • Therapy
  • Behavioral strategies
  • Organizational support
  • Lifestyle changes
  • School or workplace accommodations
  • Medication management when clinically appropriate
  • Continued monitoring

Treatment should be based on the individual’s symptoms, goals, history, and circumstances.

⭐ What Happens After ADHD Testing?

After the assessment, your provider can review the available information and discuss what it means in the context of your overall evaluation.

Depending on the findings, you may discuss:

If ADHD appears likely:
Treatment and management options can be explored.

If ADHD appears less likely:
Your provider may investigate other possible explanations.

If multiple concerns are present:
Treatment may address more than one condition or contributing factor.

The goal isn’t simply to obtain a diagnosis.

The goal is to understand what you need.

❤️‍🩹 You Don’t Need to Diagnose Yourself Before Getting Tested

Searching online can help you recognize patterns, but it can also create more questions.

You might identify with several ADHD symptoms and still have another explanation for them.

Or you might have ADHD alongside anxiety, depression, sleep difficulties, or another concern.

That’s why professional evaluation matters.

ADHD testing gathers information. A comprehensive clinical evaluation puts that information into context.

If you or your teen is experiencing persistent difficulties with attention, organization, memory, planning, or impulse control, an ADHD evaluation may help you better understand what’s happening.
